  • Pre-Columbian pyramids dot the landscape; they serve as reminders of Mexico’s vibrant and varied history, in a land where indigenous people still speak over 60 languages.

  • Indigenous communities continue to practice ancient traditions which reflect their unique Cosmovision.

  • Mexico has a long revolutionary history, from the War of Independence from Spain in1810, to the agrarian revolution of 1910, to the contemporary Zapatista struggle in Chiapas.  The state of Morelos (in which Cuernavaca is located) is the birth-place of many revolutionary heroes, including Emiliano Zapata and Jose María Morelos y Pavón, an insurgent priest. 

  • Mexico is world-renowned for its contributions to the arts, and has been home to famous artists both past and present, from painters Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, to actor and singer Pedro Infante, to modern-day Nobel Prize winning author Octavio Paz.

  • Mexico’s colonial architecture gives many of its cities a European flavor, as buildings reflecting the European architectural styles of the 1500s and 1600s abound.
