Cuernavaca is located in a mountainous area offering opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, white water rafting, and other outdoor sports.

Take advantage of exciting travel adventures

  • Cuernavaca is located in the center of Mexico, which puts it within easy reach of many popular tourist destinations, as well as places off the beaten path.  The city is located three and a half hours from Acapulco, and just an hour and a half away from Mexico City.  Travel rates are very affordable.

  • There are many archaeological sites close to Cuernavaca, including Xochicalco.

  • Chalcatzingo, and the pyramids of the sun and the moon at Teotihuacan.

  • Museums of art and history abound in the city of Cuernavaca and in the surrounding area.  There are many beautiful colonial cathedrals located nearby.

  • From Cuernavaca, students can take a number of day trips to interesting places like Tepoztlan—an indigenous village situated in the midst of breathtaking mountains; Taxco—a colonial silver mining town; and Las Estacas—a beautiful natural water park where the original Tarzan movies were filmed.

  • Overnight and weekend trip locations include the beautiful colonial cities of Puebla, Chololua, Tlaxcala, Toluca, Pachuca, Valle de Bravo, the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, and volcanoes, such as the Nevado de Toluca and Iztazihuatl, which provide wonderful opportunities for hiking and beautiful vistas.

  • For those who enjoy adventure sports, the Cuernavaca area and nearby cities offer mountain-biking and trail-biking (including a 66 km bike ride to Mexico City from the top of the mountain north of Cuernavaca), para-sailing, sky-diving or parachuting, rock-climbing, and white-water rafting.

  • For longer breaks and travel after the semester ends, students can take advantage of affordable buses that leave regularly for places such as the Copper Canyon in Chihuahua, Chiapas, Michoacán, Oaxaca and Veracruz, where one can camp, hike in the forests, visit  museums and archeological sites, and swim on more isolated beaches.
