State-mandated Testing for Teacher Licensure:

The State of Minnesota requires pre-professional skill testing (MTLE--also called the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations) for all applicants to a Minnesota teacher licensure program. The MTLE - Basic Skills competencies are broad, conceptual statements that reflect the general education knowledge and skills an entry-level educator needs to teach effectively in Minnesota public schools. After completing the K-12 teacher licensure sequence, licensure applicants are also required to take a series of tests in pedagogy and their teaching content-areas. These post-program tests are called the MTLE. More information about these tests, such as passing scores and application fees, are availble in the documents listed below. These resources were prepared by the State of Minnesota Board of Teaching.

Candidates should plan ahead to register in advance of a test date because testing sites can fill up quickly. If a candidate does not pass any sub part of a test, a waiting period of 60 days is required before the test can be retaken.

*  Frequently Asked Questions about the testing program and requirements.

*  An Excel spreadsheet to help candidates understand the testing requirements in the MTLE system, aka: cheat sheet!

*  A Word document addressing specific MTLE questions.

*  View the full MTLE website for registration information, test frameworks, and study guides.

Assistance with State-mandated Testing for Teacher Licensure: There are several resources available to students who need assistance in passing the MTLE State of Minnesota mandated testing instruments. The following Augsburg College resources are available at no charge to Augsburg students:

Basic Skills Preparation at the Augsburg College Academic Skills Office:

Prior to contacting the Academic Skills Office, please meet with your faculty advisor (and/or current or previous instructors) to discuss specific recommendations for you and your current preparation for the MTLE.

The Academic Skills Office is located in the Gage Center on the second floor of the Lindell Library and you can reach them at 612-330-1291.

Academic skills coaches assist students with time management, test preparation, test-taking skills and make referrals to other resources on and off campus.

In addition to the no-charge Augsburg assistance, the following resources are also available free or at additional cost to the student:

Basic Skills - Study Materials

MTLE Expanded Guides, available for Basic Skills, Pedagogy, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Communication Arts/Literature, and Social Studies, are aligned to MTLE test content, featuring sample questions with correct response rationales, annotated test frameworks, a score report interpretation guide, and other helpful study tools. NES Prep, a series of online-based study guides for 12 test fields, may be a helpful additional resource for MTLE candidates. Students begin with a diagnostic test to determine areas of strength and where more study may be needed. Instructional content, divided into chapters by topic, includes multimedia elements such as videos, and offers abundant exercises to review key concepts.

MTLE Expanded Guides, NES Prep guides, and online practice tests may be useful in the classroom as tools to support the curriculum or to review student progress. Access codes are available for full-length product reviews, and classroom or institutional orders may qualify for additional discounts.

Other Sources from Other States

The MTLE represents a list of competencies, and those competencies are found in other states where Pearson is the test company. However, the material(s) represent examples from other states and should be reviewed carefully.

California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST)

Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE)

Michigan State Teachers Certification Exam (MTTC)
