Instructions: Type your name and date in the spaces provided. Next, perform the following operations. Type your answers to question #4 in the space provided or on a separate sheet, making sure to use college-level writing mechanics (estimated length, at least 3-4 typed paragraphs, double-spaced). Clearly label your answers. Then print this page and attach to your assignment.

Please read the lesson very carefully and follow the instructions exactly--step-by-step. This lesson can be done in less then 10 minutes if you read the entire lesson first and follow the instructions step-by-step! If after trying it yourself you can't get it to work, please contact me and we'll do the lesson together.

  1. Search for a piece of software using a web site such as Download.com. It could be a game, a typeface, an educational program, or any other type of software in which you are interested.

If you can't think of something for which you can search, try finding an electronic gradebook as illustrated in the lesson. Download.com is located at:

Other sites to use in place of Download.com: These are several automated file transfer web sites, of which Download.com is only one. If for some reason Download.com is not to your liking, or is unavailable, try one of the alternates mentioned in the lesson.

  2. Download (and decompress/translate, if necessary) your download. Try it out.

(Important note: if you don't own your own computer, please arrange to work with the instructor during office hours to finish this assignment)

  3. Print-out some evidence of a successful file transfer, e.g.,:

    • If you downloaded a gradebook, print out a blank class record.
    • If it was some other kind of software, print-out some evidence of successful file transfer: a blank document perhaps, or the program's "splash screen," the screen that appears when you choose "About this program..."). Or you might simply take a picture of the screen by holding down the following key combination:

      • Macintosh: Use the program "Grab" which is located in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder.
      • Windows: Alt + Print Screen copies the current screen to your clipboard--paste this picture into another program such as Paint or Note Pad to print.

  4. Write an answer to the following questions (Est. length of response: at least 3-4 typed paragraphs, double-spaced ):

    • What did you download?
    • For what were you looking in a download of this sort? (i.e., what evaluation criteria are you using to judge this item?)
    • What is your evaluation of this piece of software?
