Augsburg College offers a licensure program in secondary education. It is approved by the State of Minnesota Board of Teaching and accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The department also works with students who want to teach in other states or countries.

This program leads to a license qualifying holders to teach at the middle and secondary levels (grades 5-12). Students major in an academic subject and take a sequence of professional education courses. Students have advisors in both the Education Department and in the area of their academic major.

Licensure programs for secondary education are offered in English-Language Arts, Health, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Science (Chemistry or Physics), Science (Grades 5-9), Social Studies, Speech, Theatre Arts, and in the K-12 specialty areas of
Art, Music, and Physical Education.

Licensure in secondary education is available for all majors during the traditional weekday schedule (M-F). Clinical fieldwork and student teaching in all programs is taken during the weekday calendar (M-F). Coursework leading to licensure in English-Language Arts and Social Studies--History or Psychology emphasis, is also available in the
weekend schedule (F-Su).

Augsburg College Online Course Catalog for descriptions of specific courses in our licensure programs.

Program Standards:
Earning a Minnesota teaching certificate is not merely course-based. Students demonstrate their possession of rigorous outcome-based
professional standards by completing a program portfolio as they progress through the Education Department coursework. Students are advanced to student teaching placements only after a favorable review of their readiness based on portfolio documentation.
