- 12/7/09: REU at UCLA
- The Institute for Pure and
Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at the University of California Los Angeles
(UCLA) runs a unique summer program for undergraduate students. The
Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS) provides an
opportunity for exceptional students in math and related disciplines to
work in teams on real world research projects proposed by a sponsor
from industry or a national lab. Sponsors have included Pixar,
Microsoft, Symantec, Los Alamos, the Aerospace Corporation, Amgen,
Arete, Jet Propulsion Lab, and many others. We encourage all bright,
young students to
apply, especially women and minorities. This is an educational and very
exciting two month program near the heart of Los Angeles at one of the
premiere educational institutions in the United States. If accepted the
program covers the student’s travel, housing and most meals,
and offers a generous stipend. Students immerse themselves in research
and learn how to deal with real world problems. In addition to RIPS in
Los Angeles, IPAM will again offer RIPS-Beijing in 2010 in partnership
with Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). This is an exciting opportunity
for U.S. undergrads to work with Chinese students on projects sponsored
by an MSRA research group in China for the summer. English is the only
language required for participation. The format is the same as RIPS-LA;
two American and two Chinese students will form a team. In addition to
the above in 2010 we are starting in another location –
RIPS-Berlin in partnership with MATHEON. We’re proud to offer
this opportunity for undergrads to work with European students on
projects in Germany for the summer. English is the only language
required for participation. The format is the same as RIPS-LA; two
American and two European students will form a team. The deadline for
applications is February 15, 2010.

- 12/7/09: REU at Oakland University
- This spring (2010) the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Oakland University
will host an REU program in computational mathematics and
statistics. The program targets women and minority students who have
not yet had
the opportunity to participate in mathematical or statistical research,
but the program
is open to all U.S. citizens or permanent residents who meet the
mathematical
qualifications. More
information can be found here.

Experience
in Research by Undergraduate
Mathematicians
(VERUM) provides an opportunity for rising sophomore and junior
students to engage in a first research experience in
mathematics.
The
VERUM program is looking for exceptional students who are looking for a
research experience that will help them to decide if graduate studies
in the mathematical sciences should be part of their future
plans.
Being committed to graduate study is not
a prerequisite for
this program, but rather a desired outcome. First generation
college
students, minority students, and women are particularly encouraged to
