INTEGRATED TERM - Course Description
Fate of the Earth 101: Consumption of Food, Fuel, and Media in Contemporary Culture
Our divided world is both fact and illusion. Some nations consume vast amounts of resources, while others have little or none. The Food Network shows people in ‘eating contests’ while millions of others go days or longer without a nourishing meal. Commercial television inundates us with reasons to purchase and use automobiles as much as possible, while some folks can’t afford enough fuel to heat their homes in the winter.
The divided world – a bifurcated world of great wealth and deep poverty – has never looked so stark. But is it an illusion to think of this division as the result of separate phenomena? Is it possible that the wealth of one is related to the poverty of another? Are we divided and connected? What responsibilities do we have to each other, to other species, and to the larger ecosystem on which we depend for our survival?
