Information Technology - Office 2007 and 2008
How do I learn about the differences between Office 2003 and Office 2007?
Microsoft has some interactive guides online that show you how to find where the new office menu items are located.
New file formats
With the release of Office 2007 Microsoft is using a new file format standard called .docx.
Why does this matter?
Older versions of Microsoft Office (Office XP or 2003) will not be able to open files saved in Office 2007. People not using Office 2007 will need to download a converter for the older Microsoft Office versions. If you send an Office 2007 .docx file (like a homework assignment) to someone who does not have Office 2007 they will not be able to read it.
Is there another option?
Yes. Anyone using Office 2007 can "Save As" in the older MS Office format. To change your default "Save As" format do these 2 steps.
- Open Word 2007 > Office Button > Save As > Tools (Lower Right Corner) > Save Options
- Set the file format to .doc.
What about Macs?
Office 2008 can read Office 2007 files. Faculty and staff can download Office 2008 for their personal machines on the Software for Home Use page. Campus Macintoshes will be upgraded, if they meet minimum requirements, by Fall 2008. If a faculty or staff member needs to have Office 2008 and if their computer meets the minimum requirements they should contact their LFC.
