Find Reserves

Library reserves can be searched by professor's name, or by course number using the search boxes above.

All items that are on reserve in the library appear on the same list, whether they are books, videos, music, or electronic files.

In addition to books and articles, there are CDs and videos on reserve. You can check out a CD/Tape player and headphones to listen to CD, and there are video viewing stations throughout the library.

Downloading electronic reserves

Electronic Reserves files can be quite large, and download times will vary considerably.  On fast connections, such as those here on campus, the files may download as fast as 1 page per second. On a slower dial-up modem, it may take as long as 1 minute per page. If you are trying to access the reserves electronically, please be patient and allow plenty of time to download the files.

You will need your Augsburg ID with barcode number to access Electronic Reserves. In addition, you will need at least version 5 of Adobe Acrobat to view articles.

Audio files are also on Electronic Reserve.  They are in MP3 format, and can be played with Windows Media Player, Apple QuickTime, or your favorite Mpeg player.

Place items on reserve

  1. What can I place on reserve?
    (not an exhaustive list)
    • Books from the collection
    • Books from your personal collection
    • Journal articles (only one per issue)
    • Book chapters (only one per book)
    • Practice exams
    • Sample papers (with written permission of the student)
    • Electronic files (course notes, web page, etc.)
    • CDs or CD-ROMs
    • Videos
  2. What can not be placed on reserve?
    • Books from other libraries
    • Reference books
    • Entire periodicals from the Augsburg collection
  3. How long does it take to place something on reserve?
    • It can take up to two weeks to process an item for reserve. We try to process items as fast as possible, but several factors can affect how long it takes, including workload (many requests come in at the beginning of the term) and receiving copyright permission.

  4. How do I place an item on reserve?
  5. There are two ways to submit items for reserve:

    • Stop at the Circulation Desk on the Street Level of the library with your materials and fill out a Reserve Request Form.
    • E-mail your electronic file to Karen Hogan.
  6. What are e-reserves?
    • An e-reserve is an electronic copy of an article, book chapter, or other short document that is made available in PDF format for students to download. For technical and copyright reasons, we may not be able to place your item in electronic format. Copyright rules for e-reserves are stricter than they are for traditional paper reserves, but we will make every effort to place all articles that you submit for reserves in electronic format. A clean copy from you will result in clearer, smaller files for your students.
  7. What about download times?
    • PDF files can be quite large, and can take up to 1 minute per page with a dial-up internet connection. Fast connections, such as those here on campus, can be as fast as 1 second per page. Remember that a 10 minute download can still be faster than a trip to campus for your students.
  8. How do I determine copyright?
    • The library staff will be happy to help you resolve any copyright issues. Please see this link for information from the American Library Association about Fair Use: http://copyright.ala.org. The Augsburg librarians have also prepared information on copyright that you can find in the library's public folder on AugNet. If there is a copyright fee, the faculty or department requesting that the document be placed on electronic reserve will be responsible for paying these copyright permission costs.
  9. How do I know if my reserve materials are available for student use?
    • We will contact you if we have any problems or questions regarding your reserve request. You can check for your reserves by searching for your class on the Reserves page.
  10. How long will the materials remain on reserve?
    • All materials are removed from reserve at the end of each term. We will send you your originals and a report of how many times your reserves were accessed.
  11. I have another question!
    • Feel free to give us a call or email us. You can reach Karen Hogan at x1015.
