Minnesota Mathematics League - STATE TOURNAMENT
The 26th state tournament was held at South Saint Paul High School on March 8, 2010. Teams and individuals who led their division or who ranked near the top of the overall state standings after the end of the regular season (Meet 5) on February 8 were invited to join in the fun. League funds cover the costs of the tournament which include the recognition banquet, overnight housing, and transportation costs.
The tournament begins with the invitational event where individual students are given a 30-minute test with the possibility of earning 24 points. There are 15 questions that increase in difficulty.
The top ten scorers from the invitational event then participate in the Math Bowl on the stage of the auditorium at South St Paul High School. This event is for fun only and is a quick-response, elimination competition. Eight or more math questions are asked until all students are eliminated except one. The students have 30 to 120 seconds to answer each question and hold up their written answers on a large placard in front of their cheering peers in the audience. The correct answers and how to solve them are shown on a screen when time is called.
Following this event, the teams and individuals begin the state tournament exams. After the banquet, there is an awards ceremony where trophies are presented to the top three Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams and the top All Around scoring individuals.
