INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

picture of womanInternational Student (F-1) Applicants

The Department of Social Work encourages qualified applicants from other countries to apply to the MSW program. An F-1 student is a nonimmigrant who is pursuing a "full course of study" to achieve a specific educational or professional objective, at an academic institution in the United States that has been designated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to offer courses of study to such students, and has been enrolled in SEVIS (the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). International F-1 applicants follow the same timelines and application procedures as U.S. residents; however they must follow these additional instructions

  • All application materials must be submitted in English;
  • Proof of English competency is required by submitting official scores from the TOEFL;
  • Applicants who have completed coursework from an institution outside of the United States must request an evaluation of credentials;
  • Proof of financial support must be demonstrated;
  • Health insurance is required

Proof of English Competency

In order to receive an F-1 visa, Department of State (DOS) regulations require international applicants to be sufficiently proficient in English to pursue a full course of study.

To fulfill this requirement, Augsburg graduate programs require international applicants to submit an official score report from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).  (www.ets.org/toefl/)  Required minimum scores of 100 (iBT) or 600 (PBT).

The TOEFL is waived for applicants who have a four-year degree from a U.S. institution with a minimum of two years of successful academic work completed in the U.S. (seven or more courses).

International Transcript Evaluation

Augsburg requires an “evaluation of credentials” for any transcript(s) from an institution outside of the United States.   The evaluation report should be sent directly to the program to which you are applying.

This evaluation should include the following:

  1. Analysis of credentials – to determine if your degree is equivalent to an accredited U.S. bachelor's degree.
  2. Course by course evaluation – to show your complete course listing with credit values and grades received for each course.
  3. Calculation of grade point average – to demonstrate your cumulative grade point average using the standard U.S. grading system, i.e., A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0.
  4. Translation to English (if applicable)

Proof of Financial Support
International applicants must provide reliable documentation showing they have financial resources adequate to meet expenses for the duration of their academic program, which include tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, health insurance, personal expenses and living expenses for dependents (if applicable). Either you or your financial sponsor must complete and submit a Declaration of Finances with appropriate documentation, such as bank statement or other financial records.

Health Insurance
All F-1 international students and their dependents are required to have adequate health insurance coverage for the duration of their program. International students will be enrolled in the Augsburg international student plan unless they fill out a waiver verifying proof of coverage through an alternative provider for the same period.
