"Augsburgian" takes the bronze

yearbook The Augsburg yearbook staff follows a simple rule: create a yearbook publication that covers all aspects of Augsburg College. Each year, the “Augsburgian” reports on college events, clubs and organizations, sports, student life, and people.

Kathy Rumpza, creative director in the Office of Marketing and Communication, believes “creating a yearbook requires a staff that is responsible, committed, and enthusiastic about producing the best yearbook possible for Augsburg College.” And last year, their hard work paid off. The 06-07 “Augsburgian” took third place in the American Scholastic Press Association.

Schools from around the country submit their yearbook to be judged on its content presentation, page design, photography, publication structure, and creativity. Each yearbook is graded on a point system and the top yearbooks are selected in each classification. Classifications are outlined by the school’s yearbook budget. Yearbooks with outstanding design and content can also receive first place with special merit.

According to the American Scholastic Press Association, “The quality of a school’s publications and how they present themselves to their reading community is a guidepost to the quality of the publishing school. Many studies have shown that the school yearbook is the one single item most often saved by graduates and can be located by most people even ten years later.” With last year’s award hanging in the yearbook office, the 07-08 “Augsburgian” staff has a lot to live up to. Rumpza, who serves as the yearbook’s staff adviser, has high hopes. “I am sure that this year’s book will be even better,” she said.

Jessica King, Augsburgian Commissioner, believes the book serves as a way to connect past and present. “To me the yearbook is important because it allows you to see the progression of the school and the students. It also allows people to be able to look back and say, ‘That was me then, this is me now.’”

The 07-08 “Augsburgian” is free to students and faculty. Watch the Daily A-Mail for announcements about yearbook pick-up times in Christensen Center.
