Conference Information

 

Conference Headquarters

The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn Metrodome, 1500 Washington Avenue South in Minneapolis, MN. The conference room rate is $99.00 per night. For reservations, please contact the hotel directly at 1-800-448-3663 or 612-333-4646 or via the hotel’s web site. Remember to specify that you are with the NGPHC. The conference registration code is GPH.

 

Registration

Participants and attendees may preregister using the form at the web site. The fee for registration received on or before September 16 is $40.00. Registration received after that date will be $50.00. Students with a valid student ID may register for the full conference for $25.00 on or before September 16, or $30.00 thereafter. Full-time students not on the program will be admitted for a one-day registration fee of $10 with a valid student ID.

 

All participants and attendees must register for the conference.

 

 

Publications Exhibit

Books and other publications will be exhibited in the foyer outside of the main floor meeting rooms. Exhibit hours are 8:30-4:30 on Thursday and Friday, and 8:30-11:30 on Saturday.

 

 

Session Locations

Sessions will be held in the main floor ballroom and the third floor conference rooms at the Holiday Inn Metrodome. Three sessions at 11:00 on Friday will be held at the Elmer Andersen Library, two blocks east of the hotel on the University of Minnesota campus.

 

 

Organizational Luncheons

The Society for Military History will sponsor a luncheon at 12:45 on Thursday, October 10, in Ballroom E. The cost for the luncheon is $17.

 

A luncheon for women historians will be held in Ballroom F at 12:45 on Thursday, October 10. The cost for this luncheon is $20; the menu selections are on the registration form.

 

Reservations for the luncheons must be received by Monday, October 7.

 

 

Reception

Augsburg College will host a reception at the Elmer Andersen Library on the University of Minnesota campus on Thursday, October 10, from 5:00 until 6:30. Tours of the library’s underground storage caverns will be available throughout the reception.

 

 

Banquet

In order to allow conference attendees the opportunity to make independent plans for Friday evening activities, this year’s banquet will be held at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, October 11 in Ballrooms C-F.

 

The banquet speaker is Karal Ann Marling, professor of art history and American studies at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Marling is a noted commentator on popular culture and is the author of numerous books, including George Washington Slept Here: Colonial Revivals and American Culture (1988), Iwo Jima: Monuments, Memories, and the American Hero (1991), Graceland: Going Home with Elvis(1996), As Seen on TV: The Visual Culture of Everyday Life in the 1950s (1996), and Designing Disney’s Theme Parks: The Architecture of Reassurance (1997).

 

The cost of the banquet is $20. Tickets may be purchased using the registration form in the program.

 

Reservations for the banquet must be received by Monday, October 7.

 

 

 

Larry Rowen Remele Award

Established by the Northern Great Plains History Conference to honor the memory of Larry Rowen Remele, this award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the betterment of the conference. Remele, a long-time editor of North Dakota History, worked energetically to promote and enhance the conference and was serving as council chair at the time of his premature death in 1988.

 

The recipient of the Larry Rowen Remele Award for 2002 is J. Michael McCormack. He is an associate professor of History at Bismarck State College, where he has taught since 1966.  Professor McCormack has been an active participant in the NGPHC almost since its inception and he has served on the conference council since 1994. He co-chaired the 1984 and 1997 meetings in Bismarck, and he will chair the 2004 conference. He is currently the Vice-Chair and historian on the regional Bismarck-Mandan Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Committee for 2003-2006.

 

The twelve previous winners of the Larry Rowen Remele Award are, in order of presentation, D. Jerome Tweton, Archer Jones, Lawrence H. Larsen, James M. Skinner, William E. Lass, William C. Pratt, R. Alton Lee, David B. Danbom, Hans Burmeister, Dana Miller, Malcolm Muir, Jr., and Harl Dalstrom.

 

 

 

Transportation

To reach the hotel by car:

From the south, take 35W north to the 3rd Street/ University of Minnesota exit (Exit 17C). Follow the West Bank lane to Washington Ave. At the stop light, turn right onto Washington. At the next stop light, turn left. The parking ramp is on the left.

 

From the north, take 35W south to the Washington Ave. exit. Turn left at the top of the ramp (crossing 35W). At the 2nd stop light, turn left. The parking ramp is on the left.

 

From the east, take I-94, exit onto Cedar Ave. Turn right. Hotel is six blocks directly ahead.

 

From the west, take I-94 to 35W north. Follow the above directions for “from the south.”

 

If arriving by air:

From Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, exit airport in left lane on Highway 5. Merge right and follow “Minneapolis” signs. Exit on “Minneapolis Highway 55” (Hiawatha). Continue on Highway 55 in the right lane. Exit at Third Street/University of Minnesota West Bank to Washington Ave. Turn right onto Washington Ave., and turn left at the next stop light. Make an immediate left turn to the hotel entrance.

 

An airport shuttle is available for a fee of $13 per person one way or $21 per person round trip. The shuttle departs from the airport to the hotel every 15 minutes from 5:30 a.m. – midnight. Please follow the signs at the airport to scheduled hotel van pick up.
