Swenson
earns top coach honors,
named to new athletic position
by Don Stoner
Augsburg College wrestling
head coach Jeff Swenson has received both honors and a new job this summer.
In July, Swenson, who has coached the Auggie wrestling team to seven NCAA Division
III national championships in the last 11 seasons, was named Lutheran College
Coach of the Year by the Lutheran Brotherhood financial services firm.
"While there
are a lot of successful coaches at Lutheran colleges, few have been able to
match Jeff's team tradition of winning championships while maintaining academic
success," said David Angstadt, Lutheran Brotherhood's chief marketing officer,
in presenting the honor to Swenson.
In August, the College named
Swenson to a newly-created position of interim assistant dean for athletics
and recreation. In this position, Swenson will supervise the men's and women's
athletic departments, along with the athletic facilities department. He will
retain his wrestling head-coaching responsibilities, but will give up responsibilities
as assistant athletic director and College strength and conditioning coach.
A 1979 Augsburg graduate,
Swenson was named wrestling head coach in 1980, and has coached at Augsburg
for 19 seasons (1980-84, 1986-present). He received his masterís degree in health
from the University of Minnesota in 1982. Swenson was inducted into the Augsburg
College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
During his coaching tenure,
Augsburg has earned an NCAA-record seven Division III national championships,
and has finished in the top four in the nation 16 times, including the last
13 seasons in a row. Augsburg has won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference wrestling title 18 times under Swenson, has finished in the top four
in the NCAA Division III national tournament in each of the last 13 seasons,
and finished in the top 20 nationally every year since 1971. He has earned National
Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III National Coach of the Year
honors five times (1983, 1991, 1995, 1998, and 2000).
