Fall 1998, Vol. 61, No. 1 E. Milton Kleven Milton Kleven graduated from Augsburg College in 1946 with a mathematics degree and began teaching in 1947 at the Minneapolis Vocational High School. While teaching, he began his own business, Kleven Flooring Service, which has grown to over 40 employees. After serving three years of active duty with the U.S. Navy, he served for an additional 30 years in the Naval Reserve — a total of 33 years — before retiring with the rank of Commander. Kleven and his wife, Dorothy (Lijsing) '47, are active members of Normandale Lutheran Church where they volunteer. They are members of the Fifty Plus Club and often serve at their Lenten Suppers. In 1996, Normandale purchased a triplex in the Phillips neighborhood in Minneapolis and renovated it for use as transitional housing for homeless families. Kleven offered to completely re-do the floors and volunteered countless hours, materials and workers from his company. In 1958, he set up the Kleven Family Foundation, which has provided support for numerous Augsburg programs and projects. In addition, the Klevens, along with members of their family — Bruce and Maren Kleven, David and Barbara Kleven, Barbara and Zane Birky, and Diane and Phil Larson — have endowed hundreds of scholarships for Augsburg students, provided major support for the building of the Lindell Library, for Augsburg athletics and for the Augsburg A-Club. |
