Augsburg Now: In Vino Veritas: Stories of Substance

Fall 1998, Vol. 61, No. 1

"In Vino Veritas: Stories of Substance"-in wine there is truth

Another joint project done by the Center for Counseling and Health Promotion and the theatre department at Augsburg was "In Vino Veritas ...," which ran at the Tjornhom-Nelson Theatre in January of 1994.

Like "Ties That Bind," the play was written from interviews, but it specifically focused on students who had experience with alcohol abuse. Gail Smogard, a Twin Cities director who has a background in developing new scripts, collected about 70 stories, using 30 of them in the play.

"In Vino Veritas ..." received laurels throughout the Twin Cities and was listed as a best bet in the Star Tribune that year. It was also voted one of the seven most effective programs shown at a 1994 national conference in Washington, D.C. Many students and other members of the audience commented on the play later and said it would help to open a frank dialogue on Augsburg's campus about alcohol and drug abuse.

In 1997, the Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) provided $8,000 for the play to visit three high schools and a church in the Twin Cities area.
