Augsburg Now: Experiencing Cuba

Poverty

I was raised in Nicaragua, but I now go to school at Augsburg College. I participated in a trip to Cuba with the group that was made up of mostly U.S. citizens, and only a few had been to a Third World country. My first reaction when I got to Cuba was one of surprise, because of the level of education of most of the people with whom I spoke. ... It was amazing. The poverty level that I saw in Cuba was not comparable to the poverty found in the streets of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. I did not see a single child begging for food in the streets of Havana, unlike the thousands that each day try to survive in the streets of Managua.

Camilo Power ’03 is a day student who did a comparative study of poverty in Nicaragua and Cuba. He said he compared "small facts" about the two countries and found that in Nicaragua, the life expectancy at birth is 68.4 and in Cuba it is 76.1. The mortality rate for children under 5 in Nicaragua is 47 per 1,000 and in Cuba it is 8 per 1,000. There are 7.4 physicians per 10,000 people in Nicaragua, 52.9 per 10,000 in Cuba.
