AWARE

By Jennifer Rensenbrink

Augsburg Women's Activities, Resources and Education (AWARE) started out in conjunction with the Women's Resource Center because many on campus felt a need for a women's group. Two students, Nicole Lindemyer and Amy Furan, took the initiative and called the first meeting. The October 31, 1997, issue of the Echo featured an article by Lindemyer inviting the community to take part in this newly formed organization.

"After much expressed enthusiasm and anticipation, it is with equal enthusiasm that we announce the chartering of a new organization in the Augsburg community: AWARE. ... Our preliminary and primary vision for AWARE is that it serves as a comprehensive resource group for any and all who wish to engage in the intellectual, political, spiritual and/or social enrichment of the women at Augsburg."

The Women's Resource Center, located on the second floor of Sverdrup Hall, became the group's base, and weekly meetings were held there all year. Through the work of AWARE members and others, the space has acquired numerous books, periodicals and other resources.

AWARE hosted many events during its first school year, including a celebration of women's poetry, musical performances by local women musicians and a barbecue this spring. AWARE also worked with the Center for Counseling and Health Promotion on Eating Disorder Awareness week, which featured a poster campaign and a speaker.

On the 25th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision in January, AWARE sponsored a speaker who talked about abortion and led an open discussion about the black, white and gray areas of this emotional issue. Gatherings like these sparked intellectual discussions on campus and made the community come together on issues that so often tear communities apart.

As Augsburg Women's Activities, Resources and Education enters into its second year, it hopes to become even more of an active voice on campus. Contact Nicole Lindemyer, lindemye@augsburg.edu, or Sherrie Luetgers, luetgers@augsburg.edu, if you would like more information about AWARE.
