Augsburg Now: A Librarian's Lament: Nov. 22, 1946

Winter 1998, Vol. 60, No. 2

A librarian's lament

Augsburg Echo, Nov. 22, 1946
Author unknown

"That's the most awful thing I have ever seen!" - There you have a graphic opinion of the sadly sagging magazine rack in the Augsburg Library. "Can I quote you on that?" I asked Ms. Tangjerd, head librarian. "You certainly can," she replied.
In a special interview with Ms. Tangjerd, it was revealed that the library staff is working hard and often unsuccessfully to cope with this year's accelerated pace of campus life.

Besides an almost doubled load of desk work, the staff is working on a two thousand dollar lot of books which was ordered and delivered this summer. These books were purchased through a special appropriation of the Board of Trustees in order to fill the gaps in the collection. Seven boxes of bound periodicals, 100 volumes, returned from the binders, are still stacked by the door because the librarians don't have the time to unpack them or the space to put them.

Ms. Tangjerd is anxious to improve conditions and facilities in the library. To demonstrate the need of a few improvements

she told me about the chair that came apart under a student's weight the other day, and the window frame that fell out when she tried to let in a little fresh air. As a final and conclusive proof, she glared at the decrepit excuse of a magazine rack and made the classic understatement: "That's the most awful thing I have ever seen!"
