Agnes Tangjerd: ode to the librarian
Sverdrup Library groundbreaking, July 1954.
|
Tangjerd began work at Augsburg in the fall of 1940. While ideas for
a new library came from many sources, Tangjerd led the crowd
and excited people about the prospect of a new
place to study. It took 15 years for her dream come to fruition,
but in the summer of 1955 the
doors of the new library opened with much of the credit belonging to her
initial campaigning. In 1960, she retired as head librarian and took on
the daunting task of trying to put the archives in order.
Augsburg President Bernhard Christensen had this to say about
her at the Annual Conference that year.
"Miss Tangjerd has made both the present and future generations
of Augsburg indebted to her for her leadership and her tireless work in
broadening and building the library to its present status, including the
exceptionally important work of giving direction to the planning of the
George Sverdrup Library."
