Mai Fest 2000 to present Scandinavian arts and music

The fine arts departments of Augsburg will present Mai Fest, April 28 to May 10, to celebrate the College's Scandinavian heritage and Augsburg's Scandinavian music collection, given to the College by the American Scandinavian Foundation. It brings back a Mai Fest tradition begun in 1965 to introduce Scandinavian-Americans to the way in which spring is heralded on May 1 in Scandinavia.

Mai Fest activities at Augsburg will include concerts and guest lectures to "bring life" to the more than 1400 compositions in the Scandinavian music collection, which will be completely catalogued by March.

Mai Fest begins on April 28 with the spring theatre production, A Little Night Music, based on Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night.

Other events include a convocation featuring William Halverson '51 and Professor Emeritus Finn Benestad from Oslo on May 5, a guest lecture by Professor Dag Schjelderup-Ebbe from the University of Oslo on May 6, an organ lecture by Diana Lee Lucker on works of Knut Nystedt on May 9, and performances by the Jazz Ensemble, Masterworks Chorale, Chamber music group and music faculty members.
