Augsburg College

Cheryl LeuningDr. Cheryl Leuning
Professor, Department Chair
leuning@augsburg.edu

In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Cheryl teaches in both the graduate and undergraduate nursing programs. Her areas of expertise include transcultural nursing, community/public health nursing, and curriculum and program development. She has practiced as a community/public health nurse, a nursing supervisor of a visiting nurse association, a nursing inservice education coordinator, and as an oncology and home hospice nurse. Prior to joining Augsburg College in September of 2002, Cheryl was a member of the faculty at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she taught in both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs and coordinated the Master of Arts in Nursing Program.

At Augsburg College, Cheryl is an advocate for experiential education. Together with her colleagues in the Department of Nursing, she has creatively integrated several unique transcultural nursing practicum experiences throughout the nursing curricula in both the B.S.N. and M.A. in Nursing programs.

Cheryl’s research has explored health and illness care provisioning among pastoral cattle herding people in Namibia; women’s experiences of empowerment when able to access to safe child care; and the meanings and expressions of care and caring for elders in urban Namibian families. Her publications and presentations focus on advancing the science and art of nursing in a global society.

Cheryl serves on the Board of Directors of the Hamm Clinic in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is a consultant to the University of Namibia School of Nursing and a peer reviewer for the Journal of Transcultural Nursing. Currently, Cheryl is President Elect of the International Transcultural Nursing Society.
