Brenda
graduated from the Augsburg PA program in 1999, practicing in Family
Medicine for 4 years before beginning her full-time teaching role
in 2003. Her position was uniquely created, combining aspects of both
clinical and academic faculty responsibilities. She feels that this
breadth provides more continuity for the students going through the
program, and enjoys seeing their progression from the didactic phase
to clinical education. Brenda's main teaching areas are the Clinical
Phase Transition course during the second fall semester, as well as
the Clinical Medicine course and its associated lab. She really enjoys
the practical, hands-on activities that are provided to the students
as a way of exposing them to the many sides of medicine. She also
continues to work in a Family Medicine clinic every week.
Brenda finds a natural connection with students, having gone through the program herself. Her approach to learning includes a relaxed atmosphere, while still finding ways to challenge students to excel. "Strong communication and patience are key values I try to instill throughout students' education here. This will benefit not only themselves, but also their fellow classmates and future patients."
Brenda has always enjoyed school, so it's natural that she's found her way back to Augsburg. "Being in one of the early classes of the program, I saw how much detailed research was done in the development of the program. I also see the high involvement of the students and the exposure to underserved communities as continued strengths. I have really appreciated the opportunity to return to the program and work with such wonderful students and colleagues."
Brenda also has several family ties to Augsburg. Her grandfather,
uncle, and a few aunts are all alumni. Her mother, Gracia, is named
after the wife of the college president who served here while her
grandfather attended seminary. Her husband is also a Physician Assistant,
a member of Augsburg's 6th graduating class.
