Program Prerequisites

 

The following requirements are needed to be eligible to apply to the Program:

  • Bachelor’s degree (from any major) from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (as calculated by CASPA at the time of application)
  • Minimum science GPA of 3.0 (as calculated by CASPA at the time of application)

The following prerequisite courses must be completed with grades of “C” or higher at a regionally accredited two year or four year college or university within the timeline specific to your degree status as defined below:

  • 1 full course of developmental psychology (birth to death, normal psychological development across the life span)
  • 1 full course of physiology* (human/vertebrate/organ)
  • 1 full course of microbiology*
  • 1 full course of biochemistry*
  • 1 full course of general statistics
  • 1 course of medical terminology **

* Labs are recommended but not required.

** The Medical Terminology prerequisite requirement can be fulfilled by taking a college credit course or by completing a certificate course through a school or health care agency (course work must have evaluation requirements for completion). Proof of completion will be required. The Augsburg PA Program will determine if a course or certificate program meets the prerequisite requirement for Medical Terminology.

Responsibility for approval of course work to satisfy prerequisite requirements lies solely with the Augsburg PA Program.

Time line and requirements for successfully completing course prerequisites:

Applicants completing their first undergraduate degree in the spring term may complete prerequisite course work in the summer, fall, and spring term of the academic year they apply as long as the degree and prerequisite course work will be completed by the start date of the program.  Applicants who already have an undergraduate degree, or who will complete their degree in a term other than spring, have the summer and fall semesters of the year they apply by which to complete prerequisites.

  • All prerequisites must be completed at a regionally accredited two-year or four-year college or university.
  • Prerequisites must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.
  • A “full course” means that if a course is offered as a part 1 and part 2 sequence course, you will likely need both sections to equal a complete, full course.
  • Prerequisites (specifically physiology and microbiology) must be completed at the biology/science major level (i.e. must be accepted to the biology/science major at your school).
  • Prerequisites must have been completed within ten years of the start date of the program the year you are applying for admission.

Strongly recommended but not required:

  • Direct Patient Care Experience:  We recommend 1000 hours.  Direct patient care would include roles in which you are responsible for things like taking vital signs, administering medication, charting, drawing blood, tending to personal cares, dressing wounds, etc.  Some positions which may allow you to accumulate these hours would be CNA, PCA, Phlebotomist, and EMT as examples.  (average direct patient care of accepted student is 1500 hours)
  • Service to Underserved:  We are looking for consistent service to those populations who are disadvantaged, under represented populations.  Your service can be a paid position or a volunteer position.  Examples would be civic or church mission trips either in the U.S. or International where the goal is to provide a service to help a specific population.  Organizations such as the Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, homeless shelters, etc. can provide opportunities for service work.  Tutoring English as a second language or tutoring students in a disadvantaged neighborhood school would be considered underserved work.  Working with the elderly or disabled would also be serving and underserved population.  Service to underserved does not have to be medically related, however, if it is, it could also count toward direct patient care experience.
  • Shadowing or Meeting with a PA:  We encourage you to learn more about the profession by formally shadowing a PA for a day (you don’t need any more than a day) or if you are unable to secure a true “shadowing” experience, meeting with a PA to learn more about his/her experience as a PA.  You will note this experience on your CASPA application.
  • Additional Course Work:  If time allows, additional course work such as anatomy, genetics, immunology, or other upper-division biology courses will strengthen your application.

Our “Guide to Prerequisites” has been created to help you identify courses that will fulfill prerequisite requirements.  We have listed, by schools in the region, courses that we have reviewed and have determined meet our prerequisite requirements.  Keep in mind that it is impossible to cover all courses and course changes.  If you have found a course that you feel would satisfy a prerequisite, but it is not listed on the “Guide” please contact us with the course name, number, where/when you would take it and we will review the course for you.
