19th Annual Augsburg Paideia Institute Great Ideas for Teaching a Standards-Based Curriculum
What is Paideia? Paideia (Pie-day-uh) is a dynamic approach to teaching, bringing together the old and the new in the discovery of ideas. Rooted in Socratic teaching methods, Paideia empowers students to be active learners and critical thinkers. According to the Paideia Principles, "all children can learn," and the "primary cause of learning is the activity of the learner's own mind..." The Augsburg Paideia Institute offers educators hands-on experience with seminars. Sessions are designed for participants to feel the excitement of learning through discussion and to gain know-how and ideas for implementing Paideia in their classroom. In Paideia seminars, the new roles taken on by students and teachers promote learning through deepened insights and enlarged understanding of ideas. Students enjoy acquiring skills for discussion, agreement and disagreement that carry over to other aspects of their lives. In this Institute, we emphasize selections that help us to understand timeless ideas, think critically, list carefully, question thoughtfully and make education work. The Augsburg Paideia Institute is the only affiliated teacher training program sanctioned by the Paideia Group, Inc. (PGI), the national nonprofit organization that works with Mortimer Adler's Paideia program for educators. What are the Key Elements in the Training? The Paideia Institute focuses on the big picture of teaching and learning:
