Ambassador for Peace

Jan
Egeland

FROM 1992 to 1997, Egeland served as the state secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In that capacity, he was instrumental in the initiation and organization of the Norwegian channels between Israel and the PLO which eventually led to the Oslo peace agreement of September, 1993. He also facilitated numerous peace talks leading to the cease-fire agreement between Guatemalan government and the National Guatemalan Revolutionary Unity (URNG) guerillas after 36 years of civil war.

Currently Egeland is working on conciliation efforts for Cyprus and as advisor to the president of Columbia on the emerging peace process there.
