Philosophy
is in an important sense the most fundamental of the disciplines.
All of the sciences and most other disciplines arose out of it.
Moreover, it is concerned with asking and answering the “big”
questions that are the most basic. For example, Is there a God?
Is there life after death? Are there absolute moral standards?
What kind of life is the best? What is knowledge and what are
its sources?
Students learn to ask and answer these and other similar questions for
themselves through the development and use of critical reasoning, assisted
by philosophers from the past and present.
The philosophy major has been carefully planned so that students can
easily graduate with two majors. Some majors continue on to graduate school
in philosophy, while others use the major to prepare for other professional
studies such as law, medicine, the Christian ministry, or journalism.
