The Philosophy Department at Augsburg College
We encourage students to take philosophy courses both for their own
personal enrichment and for professional development. We stress several
things in our courses.
-
We concentrate on helping students think critically about their world and
experiences. Students need to be able to read with understanding, discern
what theses are being advanced and how they are argued for, and be able to
evaluate the arguments presented.
-
We specialize in introducing students to the exciting history of ideas,
both Western and Asian. Our four-course history of Western philosophy is
unique in its extent. We spend a lot of time on important thinkers, to
give students the opportunity to read them and think about their views. We
also offer a course covering Asian philosophy.
-
We integrate philosophy with other disciplines, so that even if you are not
a philosophy major, we have something to interest you. We offer courses in
philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, philosophy of art, political
philosophy, and philosophy of medicine and health care.
