Junior Victor Acosta wins Goldwater Scholarship

Victor Acosta was one of 300 students nationwide to win a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for 2003-04.

Junior physics major Victor Acosta is one of 300 students nationwide in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering to win a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for 2003-04. The scholarship covers costs of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to $7,500.

Acosta, a native of New York City, is a McNair Scholar and active in the StepUP program, where he is chair of the governing board.

For the past two years, Acosta has carried out independent and team research on thin magnetic films in the solid state physics lab with Prof. Ambrose Wolf. He worked on a summer internship at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Stanford Linear Accelerator Center last summer; this year he will be at University of California-Berkeley working on condensed matter and atomic physics contributions to quantum computation.

Acosta is the fifth Augsburg Goldwater Scholar in the past seven years and is one of eight recipients from Minnesota colleges and universities. The scholarship winners are selected by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundations from nearly 1,100 nominees by college and university faculties. Goldwater Scholarships are considered the premier undergraduate awards in these fields.
