Martin Sabo Scholars Program

The Martin Olav and Sylvia A. Sabo endowment funds multiple scholarships, awarded to students "with demonstrated financial need and academic achievement, who study political science and/or have engaged in public service and indicate career interest in public policy" [from the Sabo Scholarship donor agreement]. Scholarships are awarded for one year, although recipients can reapply for the next year.

Current Scholars (2002-03): Kellen Bredesen, Allison Burgess, Erica Champer, Breanne Dalnes, Kelsey Dorff, Kristy Graume, Adam Jensen, Jamie Mickow

Procedures

For initial eligibility for a Sabo Scholarship, you must be nominated by a member of the Political Science faculty. After you have been nominated, you must complete an application, which is described below. The Sabo Scholarship coordinator (a member of the Political Science faculty) will notify you if you have been nominated, and will request information (from the Financial Aid office) showing your level of financial need. Current Sabo Scholarship recipients may reapply without being renominated. Only those who submit completed applications will be eligible for a scholarship. The specific scholarship amount may vary, depending on other financial aid a recipient receives. Those chosen by the Political Science faculty to receive Sabo Scholarships will be notified in April or early May. An information sheet is available from the Political Science Department Sabo Scholarship Coordinator (currently Prof. Aoki).

REQUIREMENTS FOR SABO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

1. Thank-you letter to donors (in this case, the Sabos), and attendance at the donor recognition dinner as well. Required of all Augsburg recipients of endowed scholarships.

2. Assist in the organization and presentation of a Political Science department event (often a Sabo Symposium-a public affairs symposium).

In addition, Sabo Scholars are expected to be active in Political Science Department activities, and to participate in an internship, preferably one in local, state, or national government. The timing of the internship can be determined in consultation with the student's advisor, and does not have to be during the time that the student holds the Scholarship.

SABO SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

All application materials should be submitted to the Political Science Department Sabo Scholarship Coordinator. The application for the Sabo Scholarship will consist of the following:

1) Application letter. The letter should

i. Include your full name, student ID number, and major.
ii. State that you are applying for the Sabo Scholarship.
iii. Describe your interest in a career in public policy.
iv. Indicate your interest in a government internship, or describe a current or past government internship that you held while a college student.

2) Academic transcript. The transcript should show grades through Fall of that academic year. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

3) Summary of financial aid Because Augsburg College Financial Aid rules set some parameters for scholarships awards, it is very helpful if you can also provide a summary of your current financial aid. We do not need detailed breakdowns, but only the totals for the following two categories: 1) grants and scholarships (added together); and 2) loans. This information will never reduce the amount that you would receive in a Sabo Scholarship, but, in some cases, it could increase your scholarship award.

Applicants must also have applied for financial aid, since the donor agreement requires that there be demonstrated financial need.

All materials are due by February 1st.
