Tips to Maximize Your Conference Experience

 Attenders:

  • Before you arrive, set 3-5 goals that you plan to achieve in attending the Conference.
  • First stop: Registration table to pick up a copy of the conference program.
  • Skim the program and highlight the sessions that you plan to attend. Support your peers by attending their sessions. Also attend sessions on topics of psychology that are of interest to you. Attend at least one session in an area that is new to you.
  • Use the opportunity to meet students from other schools. Meet new people. This is a chance to network (e.g., Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General, was a student at Macalester!).
  • Actively participate by asking questions of poster presenters and oral presenters.
  • Attend the keynote address by Paul Rozin. He gives a GREAT presentation!!!
  • Show professional behavior and support for presenters by staying until the end of the conference.
  • Atttend the lunch time presentation on graduate school. Pre-registration is required; to hold a place, send send your name, etc. by e-mail to mupc@augsburg.edu
  • Consider giving a presentation at next year's conference at Carleton.
  • Use part of your lunch time to explore the new Lindell Library (on 22nd Avenue near Riverside).
  • Provide the conference organizers with feedback by filling out the conference evaluation form.

 Presenters:

  • First stop: Registration table to pick up a copy of the conference program.
  • Ahead of time, stop by the room where you will be presenting to take a look at it.
  • Show up at your session 5 minutes ahead of time and introduce yourself to the session moderator.
  • Professional conference etiquette requires that you attend the entire session in which your presentation occurs. For example, if you are in the 2:00-3:00 session, and your presentation is 2:30-2:45, you should arrive a few minutes before 2:00 and leave when the session ends at 3:00.
  • Come at the beginning and stay until the end; professional conferences are opportunities to present, but also to learn from others.
  • Act as a mentor to students who are not giving presentations. Encourage them to ask questions and to give presentations at future conferences.
