Constitution of Queer and Straight in Unity

Article I. General

  1. The official name of this network shall be Queer and Straight in Unity (Q.S.U.).
  2. The network shall operate as a non-profit network.
  3. The network shall abide by the applicable rules and policies of Augsburg College.
  4. This network shall exist for the following purposes:
    1. To provide support and counseling for the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) community at Augsburg along with those other members who are allies.
    2. To promote general public awareness about GLBTQ issues and concerns.
    3. To act as a general information network for the Augsburg Community at large.
    4. To promote tolerance and respect for all Augsburg Community members regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, religious belief, or sex.
    5. To promote collaboration between campus organizations.

Article II. Membership

  1. We shall not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, disability, religious belief, sexual orientation, sex, or gender.
  2. Students, staff, or faculty who are concerned with GLBTQ issues shall inform the chairpersons of their interest in the group. All such expressed interest shall count as Passive Membership.
  3. Active Members shall be those directly involved in the activities and meetings as set forth on our agenda.
  4. As a network our facilities shall be open to non-members of the Augsburg Community who are interested in what we have to offer.

Article III. Officers

  1. The officers of this network shall consist of two chairpersons, secretary, and treasurer.
  2. Officers shall be Active Members of the network and currently enrolled students at Augsburg College.
  3. Officers shall be elected by a plurality of Active and Passive Members at the end of the school year and serve during the following fall and spring semesters.
  4. An officer may be impeached if a majority of Active Members find it necessary for the growth and survival of the network.
    1. Vacant officer positions occurring during the academic school year shall be filled by a plurality vote of Active and Passive Members.
  5. The duties of the officers are as follows (Duties are not yet written in):
    1. Personal Qualities/Desires:
      • Communicate well with Executive Board.
      • Communicate with QSU and outside organizations as necessary.
      • Successful liaison between QSU and Student Senate.
      • Well-informed on GLBT issues and the community.
      • Public figure for QSU.
      • QSU's go-to person (point person for information).
      • Able to organize and respond to questions clearly.
      • All-inclusive, welcoming individual.
      • Able to compromise, willing to take constructive criticism.
      • Seek out connections with greater GLBT community.
    2. Co-Commissioner Job Description:
      • Average 10 hour a week commitment.
      • 6 hours of weekly office hours.
      • Oversee weekly meetings and attend regularly, missing no more than one a month.
      • Check in with committees and other board members. 
      • Relieve tensions as necessary.
      • Meet weekly with advisor and Executive Board.
      • Meet twice a semester individually with advisor.
      • In charge of a minimum of 4 programs a semester.
      • Communicate with web master bi-weekly.
      • Meet with advisor first when problems arise within the executive board.
      • Maintains QSU mailing list.
      • Take notes when secretary is absent.
      • Communicate well with Executive Board.
      • Communicate with QSU and outside organizations as necessary.
      • Successful liaison between QSU and Student Senate.
    3. Treasurer Job Description:
      • -Public figure for QSU.
      • Average 6 hour a week commitment.
      • 3 hours of weekly office hours.
      • Take notes when secretary is absent.
      • Maintain budget.
      • Make monthly budget reports to student government.
      • Report budget to QSU monthly, or as asked by executive board.
      • Coordinate budget with executive board.
      • Work on budget proposal for the coming year with Co-commissioners.
      • Make and keep track of purchase requests.
      • Maintain archive of finances.
      • All receipts, or copies of them, should be given to treasurer.
      • Communicate well with executive board.
      • Barring extraordinary circumstances, expected to miss no more than two meetings per month.
      • Check in with committees and other board members.  Relieve tensions as necessary.
      • Meet weekly with advisor and Executive Board.
      • Meet twice a semester individually with advisor.
      • Meet with advisor first when problems arise within the executive board.
      • Respond to emails promptly.
    4. Secretary Job Description:
      • Public figure for QSU.
      • Average 6 hour a week commitment.
      • 3 hours of weekly office hours.
      • Communicate well with executive board.
      • Barring extraordinary circumstances, expected to miss no more than two meetings per month.
      • Check in with committees and other board members.  Relieve tensions as necessary.
      • Meet weekly with advisor and Executive Board.
      • Meet twice a semester individually with advisor.
      • Meet with advisor first when problems arise within the executive board.
      • Respond to emails promptly.
      • Email minutes to executive board and QSU mailing list.
      • Keep written archives of QSU.
      • Keep record of public advertising.

Article IV. Faculty/Staff advisor

  1. One Augsburg College Faculty and one Staff member will serve as voluntary advisors to the network. The individual will be responsible for signing necessary documents pertinent to the network and providing advice and guidance in network activities.
  2. The advisor will serve an unlimited term until choosing to vacate the position, unless otherwise desired by a majority of Active Members. One semester's notice shall be given to the network by the advisor of intentions to leave to allow for replacement.

Article V. Meetings

  1. A regular meeting or event shall be held once every week during the academic year. Other meetings may be called as necessary.
  2. Decisions of the network shall be enacted by a majority vote of voting membership present. No less than 50% of the voters shall be active members.

Article VI. Financial Matters

  1. The network shall not provide monetary gain, incidentally or otherwise to its directors or members.
  2. The network will be building its treasury through campus-approved fundraising efforts.
  3. Application for Student Senate monies may be applied to for special events sponsored by the network that serve to educate and promote awareness for the Members of the network, and thereby for the college community itself.

Article VII. Contribution to Augsburg College Community

  1. The Augsburg GLBTQ Concerns Network, otherwise known as Queer and Straight in Unity, will serve as a cultural and social resource by providing much-needed information and help to those of the Augsburg Community who are homosexual, bi-sexual, transgender, heterosexual, or questioning seeking a place to express their ideas and/or concerns. Because Augsburg has a strong reputation as a liberal arts college we feel that this network will add much to the diversity of this community.

Article VIII. By-Laws

  1. By-laws may be proposed by Active Members and may be adopted by majority vote of those present.

Article IX. Amendments

  1. Amendments to the constitution may be added by a 3/4 vote of total membership.

 

Queer and Straight in Unity (QSU) is the original student organization that supported gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT ) people on campus. All people, both GLBT and non-GLBT, are welcome to participate. QSU makes bringing queers and straights together a central part of its mission. We are, as always, dedicated to making the campus a safe place for GLBT people.
