Strommen Career & Internship Center - Academic Internships

Course Credit

Internships for course credit are an exciting way to enhance your classroom learning and are available in every discipline/major at Augsburg. Some majors require an internship for credit; in other majors, the internship credit will be an elective credit. During an internship, you will:

  • Make connections between theory and practice
  • Gain new knowledge, understanding, and skills
  • Apply what you learn in your courses to a related work or service-based learning experience

In addition, you will learn more about yourself and be exposed to potential career opportunities. During your internship, you will be "in charge" of what you want to learn, and you and a faculty supervisor/sponsor will negotiate your learning goals.

Planning for Your Internship

REGISTRATION:

Students can register for an internship credit during any academic term or summer session. Internships can be registered for one course credit or .5 course credit. One course credit involves a minimum time commitment of, on average, 10 hours per week or 140 total hours. Internships for .5 credit require a minimum of 80 total hours. Follow these steps for registering.

THE LEARNING AGREEMENT PLAN:

After you have located your internship and registered, you will need to structure the academic focus of your internship. This is done by completing an Internship Learning Agreement Plan. This plan will include clear academic learning goals, learning strategies and assessment methods. The Learning Agreement Plan, written by you, must be "approved" by your faculty supervisor and acceptable to the work supervisor.

The Learning Agreement form and a guide to writing a Learning Agreement are available in the Strommen Career & Internship Center.

ANSWERS TO OFTEN ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • Internships done for academic credit may be paid or unpaid.
  • Completing an off-campus upper division internship for credit will satisfy the Augsburg Experience graduation requirement.
  • Internships registered for credit are counted in your semester/trimester course load
