Concentration in Community Studies

The Concentration in Community Studies is designed to give sociology majors a concentration in urban community studies which includes an applied sociology focus emphasizing city and community planning with a required internship. The urban community concentration allows sociology majors to concentrate in one area of sociology that our metropolitan location makes feasible. The concentration provides a more explicit career and vocational emphasis than the general sociology major with its applied emphases, such as planning internships, and community development. With the required Internship and Urban Planning course, students with this concentration should be prepared for entry level positions in Twin Cities neighborhood organizations, various levels of governmental administration and program development/entry level public administration.

Students who concentrate in Community Studies are required to take four courses to complete the concentration in addition to the 7 core courses required for the sociology major. Of the four courses, three are required: SOC 211, SOC 381 and SOC 399. The elective course must be selected from the below list of urban courses taught in the other social science departments at Augsburg or the ACTC colleges.
