As Chair of Communication Studies and Director of the Film program,
I have a long
history with Augsburg. Teaching is one of my passions. I thrive
in a classroom or studio
setting. My teaching philosophy is borrowed, in part, from Sophocles
who said "One must learn by doing the thing; for though you
think you know it, you have no certainty until you try."
Every course I teach is based upon application of theory to experience.
I teach the following
courses: Interpersonal Communication; Small Group Communication;
Studio Production;
Digital Video Production, and Documentary. Each of these classes
provides you with a
solid grounding in theory, but then requires that you apply that
theory to your life.
What better way to apply what you’ve learned than in an Internship
where you will be able to experience firsthand what it’s
like to work at a TV or radio station, for example? This is important
in helping you determine a career path that is meaningful to you.
Our graduates go on to law school, graduate school, education,
media performance and production, public relations, and a variety
of organizations. You will have confidence in your abilities because
you have tested them in the 'real' world.
I serve on a number of committees that help to shape our curriculum.
My research interests
are in creative process, documentary and film criticism. My other
passion is Dressage (classical riding). When I’m
not spending time at the College or with my family, I can be found
at a boarding facility near Stillwater
riding my four horses. Dressage has taught me to maintain
a ‘beginner’s mind’ which has
been helpful in many areas of my professional life. I like to try
new things, and create new ways to engage students in learning opportunities.
