The BSW course schedule is taught in sequence and has very few opportunities for electives. This is especially true in junior and senior year. Students should be aware that double majors and Honors Program participants have special advising issues and should work with their faculty adviser(s) or Academic Advising to be sure that they understand what is necessary to complete the requirements of both programs.

The Honors Program
Advice for Honors students with a social work major
(from Megan Carlson, BSW, Honors Program '08)

*Make a long term class schedule (all four years) and list of all classes needed - making a list of each semester with all the classes offered during that term and a tentative class schedule will help you figure out if and when you can fit all yoru classes in and help you avoid any last minute panic and unneccessary stress (like needing to take 6 more courses with only one semester left!). Try to update that list at the end of each semester. It's easier to do this while you are registering for the next semester. Also note which classes are only offered at the same time because you will need to take them in seperate semesters.

*Try to fulfill as many of the 100 and 200 level classes required for social work BEFORE your junior and senior year as possible. Do the same with Modern Languages and HPE classes.

*The social work major fulfills the Social and Behavioral Sciences LAF requirement so honors social work majors do not have to take HON 250: The Social Scientist.

*It is possible to substitute out of the Natural Science and Mathematics LAF requirement. The human biology class required for social work (BIO 121) will fulfill half of that requirement so if you take/have taken another chemistry, math, or physics class, that requirement is filled. Otherwise, you haev to take both HON 240: Science, Technology, and Citizenship and HON 220: The Scholar Scientist to fulfill that LAF.

*Make Sure to fulfill at least 7 requirements within the Honors Program (so careful with substituting out above if you have already substituted out others) to graduate with honors (check from year to year to see if the number required has changed).

*Stay on top of the changes in both programs. The Honors Program especially is ever changing!

The Double Major

Students are required to have a faculty adviser in each major--and should meet with both (regardless of which major is being pursued). A double major generally takes an extra year (5 years total) of enrollment. Students are urged to make a 4 or 5 year course schedule rather than taking a heavy course-load.
