Program Philosophy
The Augsburg College Bachelor of Science in Social Work
(BSW) degree is for those who are interested in a generalist
degree (Generalist Practice; social work ethics - ecological systems perspective[for problem solving]
- cultural competency - strengths perspective with a foundation in social justice and client
empowerment). Our BSW degree prepares graduates to
practice in a wide variety of areas in social services with
cultural competency in an increasingly diverse Twin Cities
area.
The mission of the Social Work Department is "To
develop social work professionals for practice that promotes
social justice and empowerment towards the well-being of
people in a diverse and global society." Social justice is one of
the key ingredients of the Augsburg BSW: cultural competence,
professionalism and an aspriration to academic excellence are other
key ingredients. The BSW curriculum integrates professional
practice methods, field practicum experience, social work
values, knowledge and skills with a liberal arts academic core.
At Augsburg, social work education is seen as an expression of the
college's motto "Education for Service" and its mission to
"to nurture future leaders in service to world."
Graduates of the Augsburg BSW Program are well prepared for the
Minnesota State Licensure exam and provides a good foundation for those who go on to
post-graduate studies in social work.
Augsburg College has offered social work training since the
1960s and the Augsburg College Bachelors program has been continually accredited since 1980
(next review is scheduled for 2007).
