NORWAY

SWK 295: Social Welfare in International Context: Norway Model
May 9-May 29, 2005

This 3 week course introduces students to the function and structure of contemporary Norwegian social services, including an overview of its historic development. Services to diverse groups within Norwegian society will be covered, such as: children and families, elderly, immigrants and refugees, people with disabilities, women and men, gay/lesbian/bisexual and transgendered, homeless, and people with substance abuse problems. Experiential learning occurs as students volunteer for between ten and twenty hours in a Norwegian social welfare institution, and interact with Harstad residents in daily life. It is possible that students will be able to live with host families. If so, the placement will be selected, approved and supervised by Norwegian faculty.
