Tech Desk/Student Technology - Discounts on Computers and Software
Hardware (computers, monitors, and other equipment)
Augsburg College Information Technology uses Gateway, Dell, and Apple computers in our labs. Students are not required to purchase from these companies -- any new computer should meet the minimum requirements for connecting to the Internet on campus. Be aware that most companies may require proof that you are a current Augsburg student in order to receive educational discounts.
Apple Computers
To purchase an Apple computer (or any other Apple product) with the student discount, you can:
- Order online at http://store.apple.com (click "Education Store" on the left-hand side)
- Call (800) 780-5009
- Visit an Apple Store in person. Metro area locations include the Mall of America, Ridgedale, Rosedale Center, and Southdale.
Other Computer Discounts
Augsburg is part of a consortium of schools that qualifies for discounts from a number of companies. Please visit http://www.mhectech.org for full details and links to the companies providing discounts.
Hardware and accessories
Augsburg College has partnered with CDWG.com to offer discounts on computer accessories and other electronics (such as digital cameras) to Augsburg faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the college. To view CDWG's extensive inventory of products, please visit http://www.cdwg.com/augsburg.
Software
Special promotion for Microsoft Office 2007
Microsoft is running a special promotion for students wishing to purchase Microsoft Office 2007. The promotion is available from the web site www.theultimatesteal.com. Please visit the web site for information. Augsburg College does not sponsor this promotion -- we're just telling you about it so you can save money!
ChemDraw or ChemBioDraw
Augsburg's site license for the ChemDraw and ChemBioDraw software covers all student-owned computers, as well as the lab computers. To begin the process of downloading and installing the software, students should go to http://scistore.cambridgesoft.com/sitelicense.cfm?sid=118. (It's best to do this from the computer you want to install ChemDraw on). You will need to provide your Augsburg e-mail address in order to verify that you are a student at Augsburg. Cambridgesoft will then e-mail you a license code along with instructions for downloading and installing the ChemDraw or ChemBioDraw software.
Mathematica
Augsburg's site license for Mathematica covers all student-owned computers, as well as the lab computers. The Mathematica installation CDs are available for checkout from the Library. Instructions and the software license agreement are included in the packet. When you install Mathematica, you will get a unique MathID number. You will then need to contact Wolfram to get a password which will be valid for 1 year. (Returning students wishing to renew their password should contact Wolfram directly using the information that was sent to them with their password.) A "Getting Started" guide is available on reserve in the Lindell Library as well.
Minitab and SPSS
Rental of software such as Minitab and SPSS is available through a company called E-Academy. To rent one of these software titles, go to http://www.e-academy.com/minitab or http://www.e-academy.com/spss. You will need to keep in mind that there is a fee for the rental and Augsburg has no connection with E-Academy, Minitab, or SPSS (except for the fact that we own the software for some of the computer labs). Augsburg has no special involvement with this offer and students should contact E-Academy directly for any support or questions.
