Tech Desk/Student Technology - Information for Graduates
AugNet Accounts after Commencement
AugNet accounts are only provided for current Augsburg students. Once you graduate (complete your coursework and receive your degree, as recorded by the Registrar), you will receive an email within the month guiding you on the next steps. You will get a two month warning before deletion and the option to transfer your email messages to a new Alumni email address. When your account is deleted, you will lose all access to any service which requires an Augsburg username and password (i.e. Webmail, Records & Registration, the online directory, moodle, library databases, use of the computer labs), and all files, web pages, e-mail messages and address books stored on the AugNet servers will be permanently deleted.
Account Transition Checklist
Technology has no doubt played an important role in your life as a student at Augsburg. As you prepare to graduate, it is important to take some time to make arrangements concerning your AugNet account so your transition to this next stage in your life can be as smooth as possible.
- Establish new e-mail address
Your Augsburg student e-mail address will be deleted after you graduate, so it's a good idea to create an e-mail account elsewhere in the months before commencement. There are a number of free web-based e-mail services available (Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail are among the best-known). You will also receive instructions for transferring your email to a new Alumni Account after you graduate.
- Distribute your new e-mail address
Make sure to use your new e-mail address on documents such as job applications, resumes, graduate school applications, and other forms. If you've already sent out job or grad school applications with your Augsburg student e-mail address, contact the employers or schools to update your contact information. Once your AugNet account is gone, all messages sent to your Augsburg student address will bounce back to the sender. - Transfer your e-mail messages
If you want to keep any e-mail messages that are stored in your Augsburg Webmail, you must move them to your new e-mail account. You can forward existing messages to your new e-mail address by opening the message and clicking "Forward". - Back up your address book
If you use the address book feature of Webmail, you might want to export the addresses to your personally owned computer so that you can use them with your new e-mail account. - Set up e-mail forwarding
Once you start using your new e-mail address, you can forward your Augsburg student e-mail to that new address to help the transition. Instructions for forwarding your mail are located here. Please note that forwarding will be turned off when your AugNet account is deleted! - Transfer files from your AugNet folder
If you want to keep any files that are stored in your AugNet folder, you will need to transfer them to your computer or a storage device (like a CD or a USB drive). To transfer files to your own computer, connect to your AugNet folder and copy the files from your AugNet folder into a location on your computer. - Plan computer access
When your AugNet account is deleted, you won't be able to use the computers on campus anymore. Now is the time to start thinking about where you will use computers. If you are considering purchasing a new computer, please feel free to contact the TechDesk manager for advice or assistance in deciding what kind of computer would best suit your needs. (If you buy the computer while you're still a student, you may be able to save some money with a student discount!) - Sign up for the Alumni Online Community
The Office of Alumni Relations provides an online community for Augsburg alumni. Visit their web site at www.augsburg.edu/alumni for more information and to sign up.
