Culturally Specific Programming
We took our existing debate model, put it in the hands of Spanish-speaking students and coaches, and from that seed they developed the Spanish language debate league. The program continues to expand, and in the coming season we will offer three debate tournaments specifically for the our Spanish speaking students. All rounds and judging will be entirely in Spanish.
There is still work to be done supporting Latino students in Minnesota to see the widest parts of the achievement gap close. This community leadership initiative is a way to focus on students as assets –rather than deficits– by providing culturally specific programming. Having an opportunity to debate in the language that is most representative of deep cultural and familial traditions, has proven to be a source of confidence and community building for participating students.
In keeping with our mission to empower students with diverse backgrounds and histories, the community leadership initiatives provide even more social-emotional benefits to our students.

The rapid program growth has created a need for volunteer judges with Spanish language skills. All rounds and judging will be entirely in Spanish. Judges watch debate rounds and then evaluate teams on argumentation, logic, and public speaking skills.
Judges must be fluent in Spanish, but no prior judging experience is necessary to volunteer; judges receive a short training and all necessary materials prior to the start of tournaments.
