Mayo Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program
Each year, 90-100 undergraduate students from around the United States come to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., to work beside both young and established scientists on a broad range of biomedical research questions. A limited number of fellowships are also available at the Mayo Clinic campuses in Jacksonville, Florida and Scottsdale, Arizona. You can apply for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program if you: Are a student currently in your sophomore or junior year at a U.S. college or university, have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale), and are seriously considering a biomedical research career as a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. International students who are attending a U.S. college or university are eligible to apply.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program award is $5000 (minus taxes) for 10 weeks. From this stipend, students are responsible for their own travel, housing and meals. Most students live together in a convenient summer student housing area which costs about $150/week.
For questions, contact Glenda Mueller at gmueller@mayo.edu or (507) 284-3862 or visit: http://www.mayo.edu/mgs/surf.html
The program begins June 1, 2009 and ends August 7, 2009.
National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship
This site works as a clearinghouse for many summer research experiences. It lists them by college and provides the title of each. Like most summer research sites, it is heavy on the science: http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=12759&org=NSF
National Science Foundation's (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
The general NSF REU site (for 17 different disciplines and hundreds of schools) URL is www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.cfm. You can select a specific academic discipline area, a specific location or a specific academic institution.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The NIH is the primary agency for support of biomedical research. A number of NIH departments offer summer research opportunities. Students must be either United States citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Information can be found at http://www.training.nih.gov/student/sip/.
