Women's Studies - Overview

A student studying at a large round table, papers scattered

Augburg's Women's Studies Program offers courses in Women's Studies as well as cross-listed courses in other disciplines. We combine theoretical, practical, and research components that focus not only on gender, but also on race, class, sexual identity, and other categories that are crucial aspects of women's experiences. We have both a major and a minor.

One unique feature of Women's Studies at Augsburg is the opportunity to learn about transnational feminisms and cross-cultural perspectives on women's studies by studying abroad in one of our own programs, which provides a $500 travel scholarship to all Augsburg students. For example, in our semester-long study abroad program in Mexico entitled "Crossing Borders: Gender and Social Change," students get credit for 1-3 courses in Women's Studies credit, while meeting other general education requirements. For more information about Women's Studies opportunities abroad, see https://www.augsburg.edu/global/spa/gensem.html All of our programs in Mexico are LGBTQ-friendly and include the option of housing in gay and lesbian households or gay and lesbian-friendly households. (See http://www.augsburg.edu/global/spa/lgbtqsem.html for details.)

Augsburg Women's Studies students may also take Women's Studies courses at Hamline University, the College of St. Catherine, and the University of St. Thomas. Our four campuses hold an annual Women's Studies Conference in the Spring, featuring the work of students. Watch for announcements in the late fall.
