Women's Resource Center - Courageous Woman Awards

Courageous Woman Awards

The Courageous Woman Awards acknowledge and recognize women who see injustice or need, act on it, take risks in order to do the right thing, and raise their voices to champion women. Founded in 2011 by Friends of the Anne Pederson Women's Resource Center at Augsburg College, the awards program recognizes women who courageously strive for social justice and peace on campus or in the wider community and whose efforts, be they small or large, make a difference to women. The 2011 Awards were given in memory of Jessica Nathanson whose life exemplified what it means to be a courageous woman.

Award recipients are selected from a pool of nominations and receive a prize of $1,000. Anyone may propose a nominee. Nominators may nominate only one woman per year. Eligible for nomination are women in the Augsburg student body, faculty, and staff as well as women from the broader community. Nominations may be submitted via the online form below.

The deadline for nominations for the 2012 Courageous Woman Awards will be announced in the near future.

THE ANNE PEDERSON WOMEN’S RESOURCE CENTER

The Anne Pederson Women’s Resource Center (WRC) seeks equality for women and works with the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC) Women’s Studies Program in promoting the academic study of women’s lives and issues and in facilitating community activism. The center, which was created in April 2000, is named for Augsburg professor Anne Pederson ’32 who was a mentor to many and taught at Augsburg for 38 years.

One of the WRC’s most prominent programs is the annual Koryne Horbal Lecture which features women speakers of national prominence who address important issues that have an impact on women. Past speakers include Gloria Steinem, Robin Morgan, Jane Fonda, Winona LaDuke, Alicia Cabezudo, and The Guerilla Girls. The lecture’s namesake is Koryne Horbal, who is a consultant to the WRC and who was awarded an honorary doctorate from Augsburg College in 2008 in recognition of her outstanding work as founder of the Minnesota DFL feminist caucus and her service as ambassador to the United Nations on the Status of Women.

The Courageous Woman Awards are made possible through generous philanthropic gifts to the Anne Pederson Women’s Resource Center. Donors are recognized at the annual Koryne Horbal Lecture. If you wish to make a gift in support of the Courageous Woman Awards, please contact Donna McLean, Director of Development Initiatives, mclean@augsburg.edu or 612-330-1613.
