Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR)
Incoming first-year students at Augsburg will register for Fall 2020 classes at First Year Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR). This two-day, overnight experience includes placement testing, advising, and registration – as well as many fun activities to prepare you for college life and meet other future Auggies.
There are three separate opportunities to attend SOAR in Summer 2020:
- SOAR I: Monday, June 15 – Tuesday, June 16
- SOAR II: Wednesday, June 17 – Thursday, June 18
- SOAR III: Friday, June 19 – Saturday, June 20
- SOAR IV (tentative): Monday, June 22 – Tuesday, June 23
- SOAR V: Thursday, Aug 27 – Friday, Aug 28
Beginning April 1, 2020, students can RSVP for SOAR online through the Office of Campus Activities & Orientation.
Students with disabilities may request accommodations for placement tests and registration. To request accommodations, call 612-330-1053.
Students might take a short math placement test the morning of the first day of SOAR (10 or 20 multiple-choice questions). Please bring a calculator with you! Depending on your high school math background, you will take a math placement test that covers prealgebra, algebra, and/or precalculus. This short multiple-choice placement test will determine your Math Placement Group and helps determine what kinds of courses would be appropriate for you in your first semester at Augsburg.
For more information, including a practice math test and review resources, see the Mathematics Placement information.
Students need to take two semesters of writing (ENL 101 Developmental Writing and ENL 111 Effective Writing). However, you do have an opportunity to take a writing placement test to be waived from ENL 101 Developmental Writing.
Academic Advising will email students who are eligible to take the writing placement test. This must be completed before SOAR.
Students who have 2 or more years of language study in French, German, or Spanish may take a language placement test. This online test usually takes about 15 minutes and can be completed at registration. At SOAR, advisors will review other options for students who have experience in other languages besides French, German or Spanish.
Advising and Registration
Before SOAR, you will fill out a course request form and advisors will start registering you for your classes. At SOAR, academic advisors will present Augsburg’s academic curriculum and requirements and you will finish your registration.
Academic Advising will reach out to incoming first-year students to provide access to their University email accounts, course request form, and preparing for the math placement test, if applicable.
This will allow you to start preparing for the Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR) experience by thinking about what majors and minors you might be interested in exploring.
College Credit Earned in High School
First-year students who have earned college credits in high school through programs such as Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College in the Schools (CIS), or Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) will need to have an official transcript sent to Augsburg by the credit-granting organization to be awarded credit — a high school transcript will not be sufficient. Please have all credits submitted before SOAR so that you can be advised properly when you are registering for classes.
Please send official transcripts to:
Admissions Office – Box 143
2211 Riverside Ave
Minneapolis, MN 55454
If the college/university you attended offers secure electronic delivery of official transcripts, you may provide email@example.com as the email recipient.
If you have any questions or concerns about first-year registration, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 612-330-1025.
