{"id":2179,"date":"2014-03-03T15:59:58","date_gmt":"2014-03-03T15:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/?p=2179"},"modified":"2017-05-24T15:53:38","modified_gmt":"2017-05-24T15:53:38","slug":"auggiesridetourdecure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/2014\/03\/03\/auggiesridetourdecure\/","title":{"rendered":"Auggies Ride, Tour de Cure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A message from Alumni Board Member Jill Watson &#8217;10:<\/p>\n<p>At the spring Alumni Board meeting in 2013, Janeece Oatman &#8217;05, Tour de Cure Twin Cities Ride Director, was our guest speaker.\u00a0 At this meeting, I learned about the Tour de Cure, a fundraising event held in 44 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association.\u00a0 Immediately, I knew I wanted to ride.\u00a0 My mom has type II diabetes, a childhood friend has type I diabetes, and oddly enough, my small department of seven people has three type I diabetics, and this is probably just a small group of people in my life living with diabetes that I know about.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2180\" title=\"photo 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"A group of cyclists with their bikes\" width=\"210\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-2.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>In 2013, I rode the 27-mile route, though I was hesitant at first because it was by far the farthest I\u2019ve ever gone on a bike, but it was wonderful!\u00a0 I met some amazing people along the way, and two of the ladies I met while chatting before the ride remembered me (and my name!) when I saw them at another bike ride in the fall!\u00a0 The scenery was gorgeous throughout Minneapolis and I found trails I never knew existed.\u00a0 The riders with diabetes stand out, on purpose, in their red jerseys, and everyone there is cheering for them, and they know it as you ride by and yell \u201cgo red rider!\u201d\u00a0 The atmosphere was electric as everyone there was there for a cause.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2183\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2183\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2183 size-thumbnail\" title=\"photo 3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-32-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Jill Watson with bike\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-32-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2014\/03\/photo-32-115x115.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jill Watson &#8217;10<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I ride in honor of my family, friends, and coworkers; I ride to help put an end to diabetes; and I ride to support fellow Auggie Janeece and her amazing work with the American Diabetes Association.
