Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

When will I receive specific information regarding May Commencement?

Information concerning May 2019 Commencement will primarily be provided through the Commencement website.  Eligible students will receive an official email to their Augsburg-issued email with information about the ceremony, access to ticketing and additional requested action items by mid-February.

Will my parents also receive information?

You can direct your guests to the Commencement website for up-to-date information about the May Commencement celebration.

Where can I purchase announcements?

If you wish to send graduation announcements to friends and family, you may purchase them from the Augsburg University Bookstore.  Each graduate receives five complimentary announcements with the purchase of your cap and gown–but, additional copies may be purchased, as needed.   Please note: these announcements ARE NOT your tickets. They are simply an announcement of the activities. Any invited guests must also have an official ceremony ticket.  See Tickets page for additional information.

Cap & Gown/Attire

What is the proper dress for the weekend for graduates?

Your cap and gown are required for the Commencement ceremony.

Where do I get my cap and gown?

Undergraduate Cap and Gown

Students may opt to purchase their regalia by ordering online, by visiting the bookstore during normal business hours, or by attending the Augsburg University Grad Fair on April 10, 2019 in the Twin Cities or April 8, 2019 in Rochester.  Additional details about Commencement regalia, the Grad Fair, and the process for ordering your cap and gown will be available on the website early in the spring semester.

Graduate & Doctoral Cap, Gown & Hood

In order to participate in the ceremony you will need a cap, gown, and program-specific hood. Students may opt to purchase their regalia by ordering online, by visiting the bookstore during normal business hours, or by attending the Augsburg University Grad Fair on April 10, 2019.  Additional details about Commencement regalia, the Grad Fair, and the process for ordering your cap, gown, and hood will be available on the website early in the spring semester.

Important Note about Graduate and Doctoral Commencement Hoods:  When you pick up your cap and gown, you will NOT receive your hood.  Your hood will be provided directly to your program director, who will ensure that your hood is delivered to the stadium for the ceremony.  You will be formally hooded just prior to processing across the stage on May 10, 2019.

How will graduate and doctoral students get their hood?

When you pick up your cap and gown in the bookstore, you will NOT receive your hood.  Your hood will be provided directly to your program director, who will ensure that your hood is delivered to the stadium for the ceremony.  You will be formally hooded just prior to processing across the stage on May 10, 2019.

What color is my tassel?

Undergraduate students will wear a standard maroon, white and gray tassel.  Tassel colors for graduate and doctoral students indicate your affiliation with a college or discipline.  You’ll indicate your discipline when ordering to ensure the proper tassel color. A full list of tassel colors can be viewed on the Commencement Traditions portion of the website.

Before my degree is conferred or I receive my diploma, how should my tassel be worn?

Tassels are worn on the right side and shifted to the left after your degree has been conferred.  The Provost will direct you to move your tassel to the left at the appropriate moment in the ceremony.  Any easy reminder: “Left is for later.”

University Commencement Ceremony

Why is Augsburg moving the Commencement ceremony off-campus?

In making this change, we respond to consistent concerns raised by graduating students regarding the limited number of tickets available for their family and friends—concerns we have thus far been unable to resolve, even with two separate ceremonies. This past spring, members of the Day Student Government asked that we move Augsburg’s commencement ceremonies off-campus in order to address this persistent issue. That request initiated a review of options that led to this decision.

When & where is the ceremony being held?

The 2019 Augsburg University Commencement ceremony will be held on Friday, May 10, at 6 p.m., in U.S. Bank Stadium.

Why did the ceremony date change?

This change pushes Augsburg’s commencement out by one week, as the Spring Term concludes on May 3 and commencement ceremonies have historically been held that weekend.  After researching available venues and date availability, US Bank Stadium, which required a date shift, was the best available option.

Will there still be two ceremonies?

In 2019, there will be just one ceremony, inclusive of all undergraduate and graduate program graduates.

How will this affect ticketing?

The change will enable all graduates, their families, their friends, and members of the Augsburg community to celebrate together.  And even though we will use only part of the stadium, the dramatic increase in the total available seats will ensure our ability to meet the needs of our graduating students.  Ticketing will be available in mid-February 2019. See the ticketing section below for more details.

What time should my guests arrive for the University Commencement Ceremony?

Security check-points at the stadium will open at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10.  After clearing security (located outside of the Legacy Gates only), guests with a University Commencement Ceremony ticket will enter the Northwest Legacy gates and be able to select their unassigned seats on a first-come, first served basis.

Where do guests enter the stadium?

Guests may enter the stadium only through the northwest Legacy Gates.  For reference, this is the entrance to the stadium featuring the large rotating glass doors facing Commons Park.

You will be seated next to the people immediately in front of and behind you in your single file line.

How long does the University Commencement Ceremony last?

The student and faculty procession begins at 5:45pm with ceremony formally beginning at 6:00pm. We anticipate the ceremony will last approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Tickets

Are guest tickets required for the University Commencement ceremony?

Guest tickets are required for all guests and will be required for admittance to US Bank Stadium.  Guest seating at the stadium will be unlimited for the guests of graduates and will be made available in mid-February.  Further communication about when and how to request your tickets will be sent out in late January-early February to your Augsburg-issued email.

How many tickets will I be able to receive?

For 2019, graduates will not have ticket limits when securing Commencement tickets.  However, the ticketing system does have a limit on the number of tickets that can be procured at one time.  The total number of tickets allowed per graduate by our ticketing system should be sufficiently high to accommodate the needs of our graduates and their families–but, should you need more than is allowed by the system in one transaction, you can visit the University Events department or email events@augsburg.edu and the additionally required tickets can be allocated manually.

Important Note:  You will be able to access the total number you need as soon as the ticketing system becomes available. You will also be able to go back into the system later should you have the need for additional seats, so there is no need to overestimate in your initial order.  We do not anticipate having any problem meeting the total ticket needs for all of our students.

When do tickets become available?

Tickets will be available in mid-February. All eligible graduates will receive an email with information about registering to participate, and accessing their tickets in their Augsburg-issued email prior to the access date. This email will include all important details regarding the date and time that tickets will be available, as well as all required log-in information.  Please note that while the site may be accessible prior to the date tickets officially become available, if you attempt to request tickets prior to the start of ticket distribution, you will receive a message indicating you are not eligible for the ceremony.  Your status will change once ticket distribution officially begins.

How are tickets distributed?

Tickets are requested and distributed through our online ticketing program.  After completing your request, you will receive an email with tickets attached in a PDF file.  It will be your responsibility to distribute those tickets to your selected guests in advance of the ceremony.

Are the seats reserved or general admission?

Seats in the section of the stadium that we have reserved for Commencement will be general admission and available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019.

Can I arrange for special needs seating for guests at the University Commencement ceremony?

When reserving your tickets in the on-line system, you will be able to indicate the needed seating for any guests with special needs or mobility concerns, as well as provide details as to what accommodations may be needed.  In general, we allow one companion to be seated in the Accessible seating section with a guest that requires access. The remainder of your party would be asked to find seats in the General Admission seating areas to ensure our ability to provide accessible seating to everyone that requires it for the program.  For more details, please see the Accessibility section of the website.

As a graduate, if you have mobility concerns or would like to discuss any special needs you may have, please connect with the University Events office to discuss at events@augsburg.edu or by calling 612.330.1104.

What do I do if I lost my tickets?

You should have received your tickets to your Augsburg-issued email after completing the request form.  We recommend first searching your email for an email from donotreply@universitytickets.com. If you are still unable to locate the email with your attached tickets, you can log back into your account by going back to the Ticket request page and signing in again.  From there, you should be able to navigate to your tickets in your account. If you’re still unable to locate your tickets, please visit the University Events office and your original tickets will be voided an a new set of tickets will be issued.

NOTE:  Each ticket has a unique barcode that will only work one time.  For this reason, we do not recommend you print your tickets more than one time.  If two of your guests receive tickets with the same barcode, only one of those tickets will allow entry to the stadium (whichever arrives first).

Is there a charge for tickets?

No.  Tickets for all graduates and their guests are complimentary.
