Biology – Kathy Van Hoeck

I’m excited to present the AP Biology Summer Institute at Augsburg!

I graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Medical Technology and worked as a Med Tech for 15 years. I got the bug to go back to school at the age of 36 to get my teaching certificate. After a move to Illinois from Michigan, I first became an adjunct professor in Anatomy and Physiology at the College of DuPage. I spent 4 years getting my Masters Degree in Biology at Northern Illinois University, on top of being a mom to two girls, teaching in the evening, and working at the local hospital part time. I became a high school teacher quite by accident and began teaching Intro to Physical Science and Biology to freshmen. After a few moves to different schools, I landed at the school where I would spend the rest of my career. I taught freshman Honors Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Medical Careers, and of course, AP Biology. In 2009, I was presented with the National Association of Biology Teachers’ Outstanding Biology Teacher Award. I retired in 2017, but wasn’t ready to walk away from education yet. I became an adjunct again, teaching Anatomy and Physiology for Elmhurst College. That ended when we moved back to our hometown in Iowa. One bright spot during COVID was teaching Intro Bio and Genome Biology online for St Xavier University in Chicago. I became a consultant for the College Board and enjoy presenting APSIs. I am a Teacher Ambassador for HHMI, presenting and writing science curriculum using Biointeractive resources. In my spare time, I love to travel; I want to go to all of the places! I also find time to visit my daughters and 6 grandkids.
