He had transformative experiences singing in the choir, including getting the opportunity to tour Norway, Denmark, and Germany during his sophomore year. John graduated with a degree in business administration and went on to earn a degree in hospital administration from the University of Minnesota. He had a thriving career as a healthcare executive for 40 years in Milwaukee, Oregon, Montana, and Chicago until his retirement in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John\u2019s passion for choral music and Augsburg\u2019s impact stayed with him throughout his life. He continued to sing after retirement, including with the Apollo Chorus of Chicago. Always thinking of others, John gave back in extraordinary ways. He showed support for Augsburg music students through his incredible generosity and philanthropy. His most significant gifts were made during the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Returns: We\u2019re All In <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campaign, which included the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/2023\/05\/11\/augsburg-university-names-rachel-bergman-the-inaugural-sateren-professor-of-music\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leland B. Sateren \u201935 professorship and chair of music<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/2018\/04\/25\/augsburg-university-names-inaugural-professor-of-choral-leadership-and-conducting-advancing-commitment-to-music-reflective-of-a-pluralistic-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John N. Schwartz professorship of choral leadership and conducting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His latest gift established the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/2023\/04\/13\/augsburg-university-announces-john-n-schwartz-67-school-of-the-arts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John N. Schwartz School of the Arts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to those endeavors, he and his husband James Mosley created the John N. Schwartz and James A. Mosley scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It was one of the joys of my presidency to know John Schwartz, who was a remarkable human being,\u201d Augsburg President Paul C. Pribbenow remarked. \u201cAs an Augsburg graduate, John exemplified our mission in his professional and personal lives. When we sat together in 2023 to establish the Schwartz School of the Arts, I was moved and inspired by John\u2019s humble generosity. We have lost a good friend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, John joined the Board of Regents and served on the advancement, finance, and audit committees. He also was part of Augsburg\u2019s Music Advisory Council. \u201cJohn brought his years of leadership and business expertise to the Board of Regents as well as his love for Augsburg and its music tradition,\u201d shared Board Chair Dennis Meyer \u201978.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJohn\u2019s passion, vision and generosity in creating the Schwartz School of the Arts ensures that the arts will be accessible for all and continue to transform students&#8217; lives at Augsburg,\u201d said Paula O\u2019Loughlin, provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs. \u201cI am grateful to have known such an amazing man. He will be deeply missed.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John firmly believed in the power of a liberal arts education and its ability to set up students for a successful career and a meaningful life.
