Born and raised in St. Cloud\/Sartell,\u00a0 he looked forward to moving to a bigger city for college. \u201cHe loved the urban environment of Augsburg,\u201d Karel said. For Mike and Karel, accessibility was a motivating factor. \u201cErik lived with muscular dystrophy,\u201d Mike shared. \u201cWe liked that the campus was compact and easy to get around, though Erik rarely gave those details a second thought,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erik was determined never to let his limitations define his life. While earning his communications degree, he poured his energy into reviving the Augsburg radio station, KAUG. \u201cHe worked to gain support from the administration to restart the radio station, moved operations to the student center and managed the students who staffed it 24 hours a day,\u201d Mike said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49726\" style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/12\/Erik-and-Bob-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49726 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/12\/Erik-and-Bob-258x300.jpg\" alt=\"Erik with Professor Bob Groven at graduation.\" width=\"258\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/12\/Erik-and-Bob-258x300.jpg 258w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/12\/Erik-and-Bob-879x1024.jpg 879w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/12\/Erik-and-Bob-768x894.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/12\/Erik-and-Bob-1319x1536.jpg 1319w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/12\/Erik-and-Bob-1759x2048.jpg 1759w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erik with Professor Bob Groven<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another meaningful experience for Erik was his time on the debate team, where he had the opportunity to travel for competition. \u201cCommunication professor Bob Groven and English professor Deb Redmond were really influential figures in Erik\u2019s life,\u201d Karel said. \u201cThey were a great source of support and inspiration for Erik.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After graduation, Erik continued to pursue his creative curiosity. He\u00a0 formed his own music production company, played guitar and managed a band with fellow Auggies and later was involved in film production. He carried this passion until his passing in 2022 at 39, leaving behind a legacy marked by perseverance, leadership, and heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2025, Mike and Karel made a gift of $500,000 to create an endowment in Erik&#8217;s name that will support <\/span><b>Augsburg Family Scholars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a program that assists students who have spent time in the U.S. foster care system. \u201cThis program made me recall a couple of books I read about children in the foster care system,\u201d Karel shared. \u201cAfter learning about all the hardships these kids went through and hearing about Augsburg\u2019s unique program, we thought it was a great opportunity to support students who are overcoming challenges and not letting their circumstances define the trajectory of their lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike and Karel amplified the impact of their gift through a match made possible by the generosity of the late Julian Foss \u201930.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe also wanted to give back to the place that gave Erik so much opportunity,\u201d Mike added.
